If you already have invested in the digital library, I would be comfortable saying that the cheapest long term way would just be to get a used ps3 when/if yours goes out.įor ps1, another affordable possibility would be to get a psp/vita/pstv. I've even played PAL PS1 games and other games after soft-modding my PS3 and they all ran great with no graphical issues or performance hiccups. Pretty sure the compatibility for PS1 games on PS3 is like 99.5% or something. PS3's PS1 emulation is about the most accurate you're going to get though. I do recommend soft-modding a PS3 for playing PS1 games though since free-mcboot for PS1 is only emulation, while the PS2 end runs off your legit PS2 hardware. One of the major benefits of soft-modding is you're running off of actual hardware so the games should run exactly how they're supposed to. I'm not professional and even I was able to follow along and get almost all my consoles soft-modded. If you want any help, DM me and I can send you tutorials I used on YouTube. If any games are available to buy digitally though it would be better to buy them. You're not supporting the devs either way.
All you need is the free-mcboot memory card, a flash drive, and the downloaded games you want to play and you're good to go! Now of course there's legality issues and yadda yadda, but no one is profiting off of these games if you buy them on Ebay except for greedy Ebay sellers. I recommend checking out free-mcboot for PS2. Soft-modding doesn't require you to open up your console either since you're just installing software to unlock your console and allow for any game to be installed and played.
If you soft-mod a PS2, you can play PS1 and PS2 ISOs downloaded from the internet and relive all your favorite games and new ones too. If that is too expensive and too much work, you may like console soft-modding.
As a collector I always prefer physically playing games on actual hardware.
